‘Hardanger Retreat’

This retreat was desgined and built by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen.  A self-initiated and self-financed project. The main dilema for emerging architects is finding clients willing to take a chance with young, enthusiastic architects that have limited experience. When we first started our firm, instead of looking for clients we went looking for plots, to build an experimental structure. Doing this, we could pursue our architectural vision in line with our convictions: uncompromising, original and respect for the landscape.

“GreenLantern” by nudelab

“The lamp extends as an organic horn-like shape with a flower pot at its base. The “horn” is lined with an energy-efficient strip of LED lights. The low-energy bulbs emit a warm luminous glow that supports the photosynthesis process of the accompanying plant, creating a direct relationship between the lamp and host plant.”

New York-based studio softlab has completed ‘xtra moenia’, an outdoor installation for the San Gennaro North Gate on Mulberry Street between Houston and Prince Street in New York City, USA. A collective effort with arup and the they co., the suspended design utilizes its adjacent structures to hover over the street like an urban spider web.

Consisting of a system of four-pointed pieces, the installation uses a complex system in which the units fluctuate in size and colour to create a three-dimensional surface. Two points pull out in opposite directions to result in a tubular form that visitors can experience from below. The bright gradient coupled with the polar directional pull of the plane creates a dynamic visual tension to the piece.

‘xtra moenia’ is currently on view until 25 september, 2011.
